Screensaver: Drug Test

Update: The download has been updated for Windows XP compatibility and a few configuration texts have changed. If you downloaded the software and it didn’t work, although you chose an available resolution then this might have been fixed now.

Summer, sun, lots of colors. Find all that in a generative art screen saver of the psychedelic kind.

The images give you some kind of impression on how the saver looks, but misses the “dynamics”.

To try the saver download this file and extract the contents of the archive to a new directory, run drug_test.exe and click “Run“. You can also change the resolution if it is too high or low in the configuration screen.

If you want to use the screen saver the way it’s meant to be, copy the files to the windows directory (in most cases on drive C) and choose drug_test from the screen saver checkbox.

Also take a look at the images uploaded to deviantart.

In the next article I will write about some details concerning the idea behind the saver and some hints on additional functionality.

  1. Great work! I like the images. In fact I use the upper example from your article – the cold one – as desktop background now. Would you like to tell a little on how the images are created, e.g. which programming language you use and what ideas are behind the algorithm?

    Here’s also a little criticism:
    • When running drug_test.exe or drug_test.scr my firewall warns me because the programs attempt to access the internet after some time. What ist this for?
    • How do I save an image? Is it saved automatically at some point? Maybe it would have been saved but the program stopped before when my firewall interrupted it?
    • I’d recommend not to include such large images (each about 2 MB) directly into this article. Some people still have slow internet connections or pay for the traffic used. So, previews with a lower file size would be nice.

  2. Thanks for the feedback. I don’t know why the firewall gets interested in the software. There is no net code in it.
I downsized the images. I didn’t realize they were *that* large.
Some further options are described in the follow-up post.
I also changed a few details of the config dialogue and reuploaded the zip file.
